Handmade Rug or a Machine Made Rug - Which to Choose?
Purchasing a rug for you home depends on a lot of different questions. How big should it be? What color should you get it? What should it be made of? How much can you spend on it? Finally, should it be a handmade rug or a machine made rug?
Handmade rugs have typically fallen into two camps. In the one camp, you have the exquisite designs of the Oriental rug. In the other camp, you find the primitive country feel of the braided rug or the rag rug. But for every rug that is handmade, you can find scores of machine made rugs as well.
As you decide whether to get a rug that is handmade or machine made, all things else being equal, the final decision comes down to how much money you have to spend on the area rug. Just like haute couture versus ready-to-wear, rugs that are handmade cost much more than machine made rugs for the same quality of work.
If you're looking for a rug that is easy to take care of, clean, and holds up under heavy traffic, you may need a rug that is made out of olefin as opposed to wool. In that case you'll have to get a machine made rug as you won't be able to find an olefin rug that is hand made. However, if you like natural materials, desire a little more history in your home decor or have the extra money, then getting a rug that is hand made might be the better choice.
When looking at rugs that are handmade, make sure you make the distinction between hand-knotted (the true Persian rug) or just hand-woven. Hand-woven rugs might look the same on the surface but really won't hold up as well and usually doesn't have as intricate patterns as those that are available in hand-knotted rugs.
